Full Spectrum: More Winter Blues

When I planned this series of posts, I started to go through my collection spreadsheets looking for “blue” as the color descriptor so I could know how many models I was dealing with.

Then realized I’m a Real Big Idiot, because it was way easier to just go into the horse room and count the blue ones.

Turns out this “I don’t really like decos” collector is a pretty gigantic fan of blue things. There were more than I expected! Enough that I’m actually going to stretch this series out into March instead of covering them all from December through February.

Today, the Breyer Classics and Stone Traditionals.

Breyer Classics

This is #712237 Calvin, the Classics Gambler’s Choice model from 2017. I honestly have no idea where I got this blue guy. I had moved back in Chris right before Calvin was released and unfortunately I didn’t keep up with any of my Breyer documentation for the latter half of 2017 and most of 2018. I know I ended up receiving two bays from Breyer and traded one with my friend Ellen for a chestnut. My message history with her says I “managed to find a blue one at cost,” but I have no emails, Messenger messages, or PayPal transactions for him, so he's a mystery.

Somehow I think Kelly W was involved in me acquiring him; Kelly, if you’re reading this and remember, let me know!

In 2019, the Classic Gambler’s Choice was on the Man O’ War mold as #712302 Lancelot. Glossy blue was my first choice, followed by glossy palomino; I wasn’t at all interested in the matte bay appaloosa, so of course I received two of those.

Enter Heather B (again!) who wanted a bay appaloosa and agreed to straight trade me her glossy blue, even though the blue was much more popular and was selling for higher. She’s the best.

Traditional Stones

Without a doubt, the Blue Angel Arabian is my favorite custom body style on the Stone Arabian. When this guy, a 2013 Design-A-Horse in Dark Blue, came up on a Facebook post right after Christmas in 2018, I pounced. A blue Blue Angel? Yes, please!

The seller had him ABSURDLY undervalued - less than $100! I messaged her to let her know that I wanted to buy him, but told her that he was on a highly popular customized body and that he should be priced much higher than that. I suggested that she do some research and then let me know her higher price, because I still definitely wanted him. To my absolute shock, she refused to price him higher and said she would honor her original list price. I asked if she was sure; she said she was sure; and now he lives with me.

His show name is Ange Bleu.

This gal was definitely one of those moments where I said, “Who even am I that I like this?” She’s a 2018 Design-A-Horse in Winter Colors (which has since been renamed Winter Blues according to both the Stone Horse Reference site and the DAH Colors and Patterns Facebook group, and is both humorous and entirely fitting given the title of this blog post). The color on these varied quite a lot; some were pale blue, some were pale purple, and some were a nice blended mix, which is what I got. I couldn’t resist adding the snowflake pattern on her - I figured, what the hell, I’m already way out in left field with the decorator color, might as well just go for it. I ordered her on 12/7/2018. She was painted by Dawn Quick.

This is #9974 Little Bird on Stone’s Ideal Stock Horse (ISH), a run of 200 designed by Karen Gerhardt (a truly lovely, lovely hobbyist and person) and sold by lottery through Stone’s magazine, Equilith, in 1999.

In early 2024, I bought a Stone ISH, Bellame, from a seller in Australia, who then asked me to send a list of other ISHs I was looking for. Little Bird was on my list, and she agreed to sell him to me as well.

His show name is Jaskier.

This guy was one of my favorite BreyerFest room sales purchases this year - #9980 Lapis Lazuli from the year 2000. I wrote him down early in the week and went back for him on the last night.

I don't think I have any other blue Breyer Classics on my want list at the moment. I do have 26 blue Stones on my wish list. The top two are both Arabs - the original Blue Angel Arab (who is a blue appaloosa like Little Bird) and a Lapis Lazuli Arab. I'd also love a Fledgling to go along with Little Bird, a Lincoln, and we'll round out the top five with a Grandeur.
